Iguana Inter-Hash Run

Saturday, October 11, 1997, was my first experience running with the Hash House Harriers of Austin.  It was a lot of fun. As it turned out, this was an Iguana Inter-Hash, which means that people came from all across the country (Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Orlando, New Orleans and so on) to run and have a good time.

Over 100 of us took off from Waterloo Park in the rain at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon.  We ran and celebrated the Hash until about 4:30 p.m. Then, the fun continued at Antone's later that night.

The Iguana Inter-Hash is a little different from most Hash runs. The biggest difference is the party spirit and the butt painting.  Below is a little sample of a Hash "moon."

Even though it rained all day, we did not care. The rained added to the Hash. We didn't mind getting wet. That was all part of the fun. Some decided to celebrate the rain by creating a human chain in the water.

On Saturday, we finished under the Mopac bridge in Zeilker Park. That is where we finished off the two kegs of beer. And, that is when "Pinball" decided that it was time for her to get out of her costume. A mob of guys helped her remove her latex. As you can see, "Pinball" is a little crazy. By the way, she does a pretty good imitation of an ape, too.

Although I missed the Sunday and Monday Hash runs, I did participate in the Friday evening and Saturday excursions, and I met a lot of interesting people.

The Austin Hash House Harriers meet most Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at LoveJoys (604 Neches Street). Moreover, they have Hash Runs every Sunday afternoon, usually starting at 2:00 p.m. Check out their website and their hotline (512-459-HASH) for information on future runs. It is a fun group. They like to run, drink beer and have a good time.
