Do you want a free homepage? Do you want to keep track of, not only how many visitors you get to your website, but who visits your WebPages (including where are from, who referred them to your site, what kind of browser they are using and so on) for free? The Free Site has links to lots of freebies.

When you dial up the Internet, you are merely dialing up and establishing a connection to a network. This means that you have to run a program to interface (or to connect) with other computers (or servers) on the Inter-network. These programs are called clients. The most common clients used are (1) web browsers, (2) e-mail clients, (3) news-group readers, (4) FTP (file transfer protocol) clients, (5) Internet telephones, (6) chat programs and (7) communication programs like ICQ.

If you are curious, the programs that I use in the above categories are: (1) MS Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape Navigator 4, (2) Eudora Pro 4, (3) Agent 1.5, (4) WS_FTP Pro, (5) Intel Internet Video Phone, (6) MIRC and (7) ICQ. Most of the programs that I use are available free from various web sites (e.g., winfiles.com).

Internet Phones

If you have an Internet phone, we can talk to each other for free over the Internet, even though you may be thousands of miles away. You merely need the phone software, a sound card and a microphone. It is not quite telephone quality, but very close. So, download an Internet phone, and let's talk. It's free.

There are several great Internet Phones that you can download and use for free.  Some of the best are: Intel Internet Phone, Vocaltec's Internet Phone and Microsoft's NetMeeting. Microsoft's NetMeeting is probably the most popular Internet phone, but all of these phones work well.

One of the best Internet applications for keeping in touch with friends is ICQ. I would highly recommend it. You can see when your friends are online, send instant messages, initiate a chat session, transfer files between friends, launch Internet phones and much more.

So, download ICQ and then add me as one of your ICQ friends.  To add me, install ICQ, select the "Add/Find Users" button and enter my e-mail address (davidmit@rocketmail.com) or my ICQ number (10513517 or 113687). Next, go to the page below and join my ICQ Users Group.

My Personal FTP Server

For my friends, I have installed a personal FTP server on my computer. This means that using an FTP client, you can logon to my computer and upload and download files. However, I don't have my FTP server running all of the time. So, just page me using ICQ or send me an e-mail, and I will tell you how you can logon to my computer and transfer files over the Internet.

hotnews.gif (5741 bytes)News Servers

Most news servers, provided by Internet Service Providers with your standard dial-up account, are inadequate. If you download binary files from newsgroups, then you will want a very good news server (with complete posts). I recommend Newscene News Service. Newscene charges $90 per year for access to their news server.

SuperNews costs only $75 per year, and they offer a 30-day free trial with a full refund if, for any reason, you are not satisfied with the service. However, I have found that Newscene has a better news server--more complete and less time outs. SuperNews does keep news-group posts on the server for well over a week.

NewsGuy Extra is another news service, but I would not recommend them.  Posts typically only stay on the server for three days, and on some news groups posts can disappear even faster.  Annual fee is $70.

However, if you are on a tight budget, try NewsGuy, which is a scaled down version of NewsGuy Extra. For $19.95 per year, you get access to the basic news groups--approximately 7500 core Usenet newsgroups. Check it out.

Want a cool start page?

Go to Excite.com. News, Weather, TV Guide and more. Exicite was voted best portal by PC Magazine in 1998. However, My Yahoo is also excellent, and it is much faster.
